Magical Mystery Tour was released in the U.K. as a 6-song E.P. of just the songs from the TV special of the same name. In the U.S. Capitol Records made it into an album containing 5 songs that were singles. "Baby You're A Rich Man" was the B-Side to "All You Need Is Love". "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" were a double-sided single. "I Am The Walrus" was the B-Side to "Hello, Goodbye".
In 1987, when the CDs were released for the first time, the U.S. album became the official release of Magical Mystery Tour.

The number of songs used in the film posed a challenge for the Beatles and their UK record company EMI, as there were too few for an LP album but too many for an EP. One idea considered was to issue an EP which played at 33â…“ rpm but this would have caused a loss of audio fidelity that was deemed unacceptable. The solution chosen was to issue an innovative format of two EPs packaged in a gatefold sleeve with a 28-page booklet containing the lyrics and colour pictures
